About us

About us

The Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) is the International Military Sports Council. It was established on 18 February 1948 in Nice, France, by the five founding countries Belgium, Denmark, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. With its 140 member states today, CISM is the third largest sports organisation in the world (after the International Olympic Committee and FIFA).

In a world scarred and tested by armed conflict, CISM's mission is to forge new links between countries and renew relationships that were destroyed by many years of political instability. It also aims to promote the development of military sport in general. Sport helps overcome language barriers, does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender or religion, and can bridge generations. CISM wants to contribute to worldwide peace efforts through military sport. As part of these efforts, it promotes progressiveness and harmony among young people.

And that is why CISM's motto is:
FRIENDSHIP THROUGH SPORT

World championships are held in 26 sports every year. The Summer and Winter Military World Games take place every four years and include many of the following sports:

MILITARY SPORTS

aeronautical, naval and military pentathlon, shooting and parachuting

INDIVIDUAL SPORTS

athletics (incl. marathon and cross-country running), cycling, equestrian, swimming (incl. life-saving swimming and diving), orienteering, modern pentathlon, skiing (Nordic and Alpine), triathlon, archery, climbing, golf and sailing

COMBATSPORTS

boxing, fencing, judo, wrestling and taekwondo

TEAM SPORTS

basketball, football, volleyball and beach volleyball

CISM Switzerland

The Swiss CISM Delegation, which is organising the 5th Military World Winter Games, has been a member of CISM since 1968. Athletes who are part of the Swiss Armed Forces' elite sport programme regularly take part in military competitions at home and abroad - currently in eleven summer and winter sports. Representing one of the most active CISM nations, the Swiss delegation has not only participated in all the Military World Games, but has also hosted more than 30 CISM World Championships.

Did you know that the Swiss Armed Forces promote elite sport...

... by running an elite sport recruit school,
... elite sport refresher courses,
... and offering part-time contracts to military athletes?

Many well-known Swiss athletes have already benefited from these programmes, including Marco Odermatt, Jolanda Neff, Nino Schurter, Ramon Zennhäuser, Michelle Gisin and Nina Christen, to name just a few examples.

TEAM

The 5th CISM Military World Winter Games will be carried out by soldiers for soldiers. The Armed Forces' high level of commitment is what makes this event possible. Entire military companies will be assigned to the event, carrying out important tasks such as ensuring security, preparing slopes, setting up and dismantling facilities, catering and transport activities, and many more. The national sports federations support the organizer in competition-specific matters. In addition, the inclusion partner PluSport supports in all matters of para-sports. A patronage committee made up of key representatives from the Armed Forces, sport, business and politics will help organise and promote this major sporting event. The committee will be chaired by the head of the DDPS, Federal Councillor Viola Amherd and the Chief of the Swiss Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Thomas Süssli.
